At SDA, our Children's Classes follow an educational curriculum based on the child's age. We use imagination and creativity to teach developmentally appropriate concepts. The dance season runs September through June with an annual recital mid-June.
Ballet
Classical Ballet is the foundation of all dance disciplines. Our program is designed to introduce the basics of ballet in a fun and engaging way. Dancers learn basic ballet positions, posture, movements, and French terminology in a supportive and nurturing environment. Exercises and movements are accompanied by classical music. What To Wear: Girls wear a leotard and tights with pink leather Ballet shoes. Boys wear Black Gym shorts or pants with a plain white t-shirt and black leather Ballet shoes. Tap
This class introduces basic sounds and steps. Students will develop listening and counting skills, and explore patterns and rhythms. What to wear: Girls wear a leotard and tights with black Tap shoes. Boys wear Black Gym shorts or pants with a plain white t-shirt and black Tap shoes. Class Schedule: Thursday 6:15-7:00
Jazz
Jazz teaches body isolation, flexibility and strength. Warm-up and stretches are followed by kicks, leaps, turns, walks, runs and jumps. Hip Hop
Hip Hop is a fast-paced style of dance commonly seen in music videos. Current moves are taught in an age-appropriate manner to family-friendly music. Students must register for a Jazz or Ballet class in addition to Hip Hop. What To Wear: Girls wear a leotard and tights with black Dance Sneakers. Tumbling
This class teaches basic floor tumbling skills including rolls, cartwheels, handstands and more. The curriculum includes exercises to develop flexibility, strength and balance. Proper attention is given to injury prevention and instilling safe habits. Tumbling classes run September through May and do not perform in our annual recital. Beginning Tumbling introduces basic skills which include forward and backward rolls, cartwheels, round-offs, backbends, handstands and headstands. Intermediate Tumbling builds on basic skills to include standing bridges, limbers, walk-overs and chest stands. Advanced Tumbling works on handsprings, aerials and partnering. What To Wear: Collapsible text is perfect for longer content like paragraphs and descriptions. It's a great way to give people more information while keeping your layout clean. Lyrical
Lyrical is offered for students 2nd Grade and older who are also enrolled in Ballet. This type of dance shows emotion through expressive movements and facial gestures. Lyrical combines the technique of Ballet with the energy and improvisation of Jazz. Leg extensions are used to demonstrate flexibility, balance and control. This class concentrates on feeling the music to portray an idea or emotion through dance. Students must register for a Ballet class in addition to Lyrical. What To Wear: Girls wear a leotard and tights with tan Dance Paws, Foot Undeez or Turners. Boys wear Black Gym shorts or pants with a plain white t-shirt and Dance Paws, Foot Undeez or Turners.
